Everyone loses when a workplace injury occurs. The worker loses income and suffers inconvenience and pain. Line management faces disruption in the flow of work and worker dissatisfaction with efforts by management to protect their health and safety. The employer loses productivity and incurs workers' compensation costs. Conversely, preventing accidents by providing a safe workplace has been demonstrated repeatedly to increase productivity, improve morale, and reduce employee turnover. The Cohen Group’s approach to promoting safety is to simply reduce the likelihood of accidents by changing the way work is performed. We review the client's operation and determine the individual factors potentially contributing to accidents. We then recommend practical and effective solutions that fit the client’s operations. A large manufacturing firm that had on-site facilities for groundwater and industrial water treatment did not have mandated energy control (lockout/tagout) procedures. The facility included numerous confined spaces into which personnel routinely entered. The Cohen Group was asked to develop energy control procedures that both ensured the isolation of all energy sources and would be easy to use by the workers. The Cohen Group evaluated all operations, identified energy sources and worked with the firm’s maintenance team to establish all maintenance functions. The Cohen Group developed step-by-step energy control procedures that identified the energy source, its location, how to de-energize the energy source and the means to verify its isolation. These procedures were tied to the confined space entry program. Workers were then trained on the procedures, which have been implemented with great success. |
