| health and safety plans
Health and Safety Plans are written
guidelines for managing worker and public health and safety during a specific project. The
Cohen Group typically develops Health and Safety Plans for construction or demolition
projects where one or more site contaminants may pose a health hazard to workers and/or
the general public. For example, construction projects involving soil contaminated with
heavy metals or containing natural materials such as asbestos and crystalline silica.
Our Health and Safety Plans are written to comply
with state and federal regulations, and to compliment the clients Injury and Illness
Prevention Program and Code of Safe Practices. Elements of a health and safety plan may
include:
· Designation of Responsible Person
· Site Description
· Description of Potential Hazards
· Work Procedures
· Emergency Response Plan
· Air Monitoring
· Training
· Medical Surveillance
· Personal Protective Equipment
· Site Access and Control
· Decontamination Procedures
· Recordkeeping

SUCCESS!
During pile driving for the construction of a
commercial building in a large city, a noxious odor was released from the soil. Site
workers experienced severe eye irritation and nausea. Residents of adjoining properties
reported the odor and their health effects to the county health department. By agreement
of the property owner, construction contractor, and health department, site operations
were suspended. Investigation determined that an oil refinery had once been located on the
site, ceasing operations nearly one hundred years prior. Further investigation determined
that the site was contaminated with pools of highly odorous waste oil 10-15 feet
underground. In addition, the soil was found to contain excessive levels of lead. The
Cohen Group developed and implemented a health and safety plan that with the agreement
and cooperation of all parities, allowed site work to be completed without further
incident. |
