Johnson and Johnson (Tylenol(r)), TWA,
Valujet, Odwalla - What do these companies have in common? Unfortunately, each experienced
a catastrophic event that threatened their continued existence. It is clear that those
surviving relatively unscathed did so by virtue of their preparation and expedient access
to knowledgeable and reliable resources. As much as possible, they had planned for an
unknown but potentially devastating threat. Internal and external resources, including
technical, legal and media professionals, were already on-board and ready to take action.
When the crisis involves environmental or
occupational health issues, The Cohen Group is prepared to promptly assist by
providing technically experienced and knowledgeable individuals who have worked with media
and government agencies. Our 20-year reputation in the environmental health and safety
arena is unmatched by other firms.
The Cohen Group has
provided assistance on a wide variety of serious or potentially serious situations
including:
· Chemical spills
· Asbestos releases
· Food contamination
· Environmental (air and water) releases
· Worker illnesses, injuries and fatalities
· Indoor air quality complaints
The Cohen Group has the
experience to quickly analyze the problem and suggest alternatives for resolution. We can
also work with public relations professionals to prepare fact sheets and responses to
questions from the media. |

SUCCESS!
Just before the Christmas season, a consumer
magazine contained a story about a toy (a listening device) that it had determined to be
unsafe and suggested that the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) ask for a recall.
The story was also run on television news around the country. The manufacturer believed
that its toy was safe and that the consumer group data was flawed. The Cohen Group
was called to evaluate the toy in terms of warnings and potential harm to hearing. Using
industrial hygiene monitoring techniques, The Cohen Group determined that the toy
would not harm children, even under misuse, and recommended additional warnings to parents
be included in the packaging. Following a critical review of The Cohen Group study,
the CPSC found the results acceptable and stated that the toy was safe for children. A
public relations campaign was developed. All work was completed in time to preserve much
of the retail season.
In another instance, when a
crane toppled to the ground from a high-rise that was under-construction in downtown San
Francisco, it crushed the exterior of the high-rise across the street. Hundreds of pounds
of asbestos-containing fireproofing were dislodged from the structural steel, some falling
to the street below, some remaining within the building. The Cohen Group
was immediately called in to design and manage the asbestos cleanup of the street and
building and the subsequent renovation of the affected building. We also provided
information and data to building occupants and ownership demonstrating that occupancy of
the remainder of the building was safe throughout the process. |
