Are asbestos-containing materials (ACM)
present? Do they pose a health hazard? Should ACM be removed or left in place? How can ACM
be safely managed? If we're going to remove ACM, how can the work be performed quickly,
safely and with minimal disruption and expense?
These are some of the questions The Cohen
Group is routinely asked. Without doubt, the management of asbestos-containing
materials presents a significant challenge to building managers and owners. The Cohen
Group has successfully designed and managed hundreds of asbestos abatement projects in
public and commercial properties. We have also developed and implemented many programs for
the in-place management of asbestos. All Cohen Group project managers have
extensive experience on asbestos-related projects, are EPA-accredited under AHERA, and are
Cal/OSHA Certified Asbestos Consultants.
We understand the sometimes complicated and
sensitive issues that may arise when coordinating asbestos abatement with other building
activities. The Cohen Group is committed to a practical and careful approach to
asbestos abatement, whether it's removing asbestos insulation from a 500,000 gallon boiler
in a lumber mill or the decorative acoustic ceiling material from an elevator lobby in a
high-rise. Our experience provides a body of knowledge from which we can choose the
safest, quickest, and most cost-effective approach for the circumstances. |

SUCCESS!
An emergency dispatch headquarters for a local
utility provider was scheduled for an extensive seismic retrofit requiring the gutting of
the building interior, including asbestos-containing materials. Critical functions would
have to remain in the building and climate controls would have to remain operational
during the retrofit. The Cohen Group worked with the construction manager to
develop and implement a plan for phasing the work around the building occupants,
installing redundant controls to ensure isolation of asbestos work areas, anticipating and
minimizing indoor air quality problems, and keeping occupants informed through regular
bulletins. At the conclusion of the project, we received positive feedback regarding our
success in minimizing the impact of the work on building occupants and activities.
